Starting a project always begins with observing your land. What location receives the most sunlight is typically the most important factor to consider. Selecting cultivars that are specifically bred for your region is also very important. You will also need to determine how you will initially break in your plot. Many no till farmers will use tarps to kill the grass, this can take up to a year depending on temperatures and how dead you want the grass. Many believe this is a superior method to tilling because it does less harm to the organic matter that has developed over thousands of years.

A soil test will give you a good indication of your soil health and where to begin. Logan labs at https://www.loganlabs.com is a very good one as well as Ward laboratories at https://www.wardlab.com

Making compost or having compost delivered is also a great way to increase the organic matter quickly. Check out my “How to make compost” blog on methods of creating the highest quality compost possible.

Permaculture is also a vast resource for knowledge when developing or managing land. Geoff Lawton @DiscoverPermaculture on youtube is a wonderfully insightful channel.
